Why Waiting at Home for Deliveries Is Becoming a Thing of the Past

Remember when getting a parcel delivered felt convenient?

These days, it can sometimes feel like receiving the parcel is harder than ordering it.

Whether you’re buying clothes online, sending something you’ve sold on a resale platform, returning a pair of shoes that didn’t fit, or waiting for a subscription delivery, parcels have become a regular part of everyday life. The average Brit now sends and receives multiple parcels every month, and all those deliveries can quickly add up to a surprising amount of admin.

The Problem with Waiting In

For years, home delivery was the obvious choice. Order something online, wait for it to arrive, job done. But life doesn’t always work like that. Most people don’t want to spend their day wondering when a parcel will turn up. Yet many of us still find ourselves checking tracking updates, staying home “just in case”, or trying to work around delivery windows.

In fact, our research found that the average UK consumer spends 18 hours a year waiting at home for deliveries. That’s nearly a full day every year spent hanging around for parcels. And that’s before you factor in missed deliveries, rearranging drop-offs, tracking updates and returns.

Parcels Are Taking Up More of Our Time

Shopping online is supposed to save time, but managing deliveries and returns can sometimes have the opposite effect. According to our research, the average consumer spends 5.5 hours every month managing parcels, from tracking deliveries and printing labels to travelling to drop-off locations and waiting in queues. That’s 66 hours a year.

When you look at it that way, it’s no surprise that people are starting to look for more flexible ways to manage the things they buy, sell, send and return.

We’re Living More Flexible Lives

Think about how much has changed over the last decade. We stream TV instead of waiting for programmes to be broadcast. We can order food, book taxis and manage our banking from our phones. We expect services to fit around our schedules.

Parcel delivery is no different. People increasingly want options that work around their day, whether that’s collecting a parcel on the school run, dropping off a return while doing the weekly shop or sending a sold item on the way to work. Convenience today isn’t just about speed. It’s about flexibility.

The Rise of “On My Terms”

Consumers are becoming more selective about how they receive, send and return parcels. More than a third of UK consumers say parcel services don’t easily fit into their daily routine, while over half say they’re frustrated by having to visit different locations for different carriers when managing deliveries and returns.

People are looking for simpler, more flexible ways to handle their parcels without making special journeys or reshuffling their day. After all, managing a parcel shouldn’t feel like a task in itself.

Deliveries Should Work Around You

Online shopping has changed the way we buy things. The way we manage deliveries and returns is changing too. Waiting at home all day for a parcel is becoming less appealing for busy shoppers, sellers and returners who want more control over when and how they manage their parcels. Because ultimately, parcels should fit around your life, not the other way around.
