Transport Solutions Leader

Leading provider of transport solutions expands use of Quadient offerings to smart parcel lockers, delivering excellent employee experience and 100% of parcels received

One of the world’s leading providers of transport solutions, which include trucks, buses, and industrial and marine engines, was looking to improve its parcel management at its headquarters in Sweden. Its large campus, comprised of approximately 60 buildings and 20,000 employees, sees 100,000 parcels come through yearly. A team of 12 members make up the postal department that serves as the receiving and distribution center for these parcels.

Tedious and unsecured delivery process wearing on employees

Each postal team member used to take 20,000 steps per day to hand-deliver parcels in person and at multiple drop-off points across the sizable campus. These drop-off points were unlocked and unmonitored, which didn’t allow for package tracking and gave rise to missing or stolen parcels. The team wanted a more efficient and secure way of getting the packages to the rightful recipients and decided to explore parcel lockers.

The campus already had experience with Parcel Pending by Quadient lockers as the organization’s IT provider had lockers installed at four sites on the campus to deliver IT equipment throughout HQ for several years. The organization had also used Quadient mailing solutions, including folder inserters and mail tracking solutions, for 15 years. When the Quadient customer care team learned of the postal department’s challenges, Parcel Pending by Quadient smart lockers became a compelling solution.

Smart parcel lockers turn things around, employee satisfaction heightens

The organization gradually grew its use of the Parcel Pending by Quadient lockers, starting with two test sites in 2022, then expanding to 60 lockers within six months, and targeting ten more sites for a total of 100 units by the end of 2023. The lockers are branded to corporate design standards and are used to distribute IT gear, work attire, and small production parts for R&D projects. They are also considering oversize lockers, temperature-controlled lockers, and smaller-sized lockers for internal distribution of larger items, food, and letter mail. The campus also switched its internal mail tracking to Quadient’s Web Tracking System (WTS) to fully integrate with the lockers and gain end-to-end visibility into its internal delivery process.

With the smart lockers in place, the organization’s HQ campus is realizing several benefits:

  • Time savings: The postal department now makes only six delivery routes to each department once daily (twice if there are critical deliveries).
  • Security: Items are locked in individual lockers and can only be retrieved using an access code sent by email to the recipient, eliminating the loss of parcels.
  • Tracking/Accountability: The lockers’ intelligent software collects parcel data and offers BI-enhanced tracking and visibility into delivery flows, used daily to improve delivery efficiency and management.
  • Employee satisfaction: The postal team can now spend their time on higher-value tasks instead of hand-delivering
parcels all day. The rest of the employees on campus are happy they are assured of their deliveries and can pick up their parcels at their convenience.

Building a strong company culture by offering excellent employee experience was the main driver for adopting the Parcel Pending by Quadient lockers. However, they are now experiencing additional benefits that make the lockers that much more indispensable.
