Valencia College: Thinking Outside the Book Store, Thanks to the Pandemic

Valencia College is a premiere state college in the US with ten locations throughout Orange and Osceola counties in Florida. When the pandemic hit, the campus bookstore hustled to safely serve students ensuring that they received all of their course materials by the first day of class.

After initially mailing packages and incurring expensive shipping costs, the college leadership recognized this wasn’t a sustainable option. Picking up books in-store didn’t work because lines were snaking outside of the door in light of social distancing rules. The campus store next tried curbside delivery, but it required a whopping additional 20-30 workers per shift. At one point, members of senior leadership were shuttling course materials to students!

“We didn’t have to deploy a small army to make sure that every student is prepared on that first day of class.”
Frankie Ortiz, Campus Store Manager, Valencia College

Research eventually led management to consider smart lockers, now known as the VC Vault, and the power of using them for more than just bookstore orders. This future focus eventually expanded to allow for the library to use the lockers as a central distribution center for books and shortly, Valencia College’s food pantry will also use the service, ensuring student food security.

The VC Vault were a breakthrough solution and continue to serve the needs of students in innovative ways.
