How To Make Your Apartment Feel Bigger

One of the top challenges (and priorities) of apartment living is creating a feeling of space. The good news is you don’t have to do anything drastic, such as knocking down walls, to make your apartment feel larger.

Here are some ways to make your apartment feel more spacious without reaching for that sledgehammer.

Keep Things Fresh

Using light fabrics will bring a breath of fresh air to your living space. For example, sheer or linen floor-to-ceiling curtains can help make your ceilings appear higher and also bring a feeling of airiness and freshness to the room. And they go great with light wall colors.

Declutter Regularly

It doesn’t have to be spring to do a bit of spring cleaning. Decluttering is probably the most important thing you can do to make any room seem larger. Get rid of anything you don’t need or never use. You can donate the other items, put them in storage, or toss them. Of course, be sure to keep a few favorite items as this will lend your space a more personal touch.

Use Mirrors

Using mirrors is a quick solution to make your rooms feel larger. Mirrors refract sunlight, enabling it to bounce around a room, which gives the illusion of space. Try hanging a few mirrors on a wall or leaning one or two oversize full-length mirrors against a wall. To bring in more natural light and also enhance your view, position the mirrors so that they reflect a window as well as the outside view.

Add Light Throughout the Room

Although natural light is best, not every apartment is designed to let the sunlight in. And only using ceiling lighting can make the corners of a room seem dark. However, you can brighten up a room by adding table lamps or floor lamps, which will illuminate corners and make low ceilings seem higher.

Choose the Right Furniture

When you live in an apartment, it’s important to make every piece of furniture count. For example, a daybed can double as a bed for overnight guests. You should also look for pieces that double as storage, such as a trunk that you can use as an ottoman.
