Rob Zinsky, VP of Business Development for Higher Education at Parcel Pending by Quadient, sat down with Calvin Mosley, Executive Director of Housing and Residence Life at Mississippi State University, to unpack how the university replaced a package process run on Excel and phone calls with Parcel Pending smart parcel lockers. Packages were logged in a spreadsheet by undergraduate desk assistants, and pickup depended entirely on someone being at the desk when a resident showed up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not postal workers, per se,\u201d Mosley said of his student staff. The system worked well enough on a good day, but any gap in coverage left packages exposed and residents waiting.<\/p>\n<h2>What today&#8217;s students expect from package pickup<\/h2>\n<p>Student expectations have changed since Mosley\u2019s own undergraduate years, and he sums up the difference in two words: instant gratification. Students who grew up with Amazon and DoorDash expect the same self-service convenience from campus operations, including round-the-clock access to their deliveries.<\/p>\n<p>Mississippi State built its process around that expectation. Staff work toward an internal standard of getting every package into a locker by 5 or 6 p.m. the day it arrives, after which residents can retrieve it whenever their schedule allows, even at 3 a.m. once the desks close.<\/p>\n<h2>The results after two semesters<\/h2>\n<p>No packages have gone missing since the lockers came online. Before the rollout, a lost delivery meant staff turned detective and occasionally handed the search to university police. Now every package carries an audit trail showing who logged it, when, and into which locker, backed by cameras on the units themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The staff impact surprised Mosley most. He worried the lockers would pile responsibilities onto desk assistants whose shifts already fill with lockouts and after-hours emergencies. Instead, student workers found the system easier than the old spreadsheet. The lockers have even joined the campus tour, where parents who once eyed unattended packages on lobby desks now stand in front of a branded locker bank that many mistake for part of the wall.<\/p>\n<h2>Paying for it and bringing the campus along<\/h2>\n<p>Funding came out of the housing and residence life budget, with no added fee for students. Getting budget approved meant early coordination with university IT on network drops, physical plant on electrical, and the facilities maintenance team on siting. Mosley credits that groundwork for a timeline the team beat.<\/p>\n<h2>What comes after packages<\/h2>\n<p>Mosley now sees lockers as versatile infrastructure rather than just package storage, and the idea arrived from an unexpected direction. When rec services offered to put its own equipment-checkout lockers in the residence halls, Mosley declined and started asking what his existing system could already absorb.
