This year, it\u2019s about leveraging <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">technology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, embracing lessons learned, and improving the <\/span><a href=\"\/en-us\/blog\/how-to-create-the-best-university-experience-for-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experience <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at university<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Student Experiences with Technology During the Pandemic<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a new study analyzing the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experience with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">technology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the pandemic, colleges and universities scored quite well<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Over 80% had Internet service that met their needs, 72% of students didn\u2019t experience any device issues, and virtually all of them resolved any tech issues on their own. Usage of videoconference skyrocketed to mainstream status with 87% of campuses projected to embrace it by the end of 2021<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">technology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> got failing grades when it came to the following issues:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instructors requiring unfamiliar applications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inability for students to collaborate with others adequately<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor monitoring and proctoring practices that deprived students of test-taking times<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professors not adapting their courses for online <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learning <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outside<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">classroom<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(too many slides, not enough interaction <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">faculty member<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">undergraduate students<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghosting and ineffectual communication by instructors and professors<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Technology Prepares Graduates for Jobs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not surprisingly, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Apple shows that students learn core competencies faster with the power of laptops. Employing gamification &#8211; turning stagnant lessons into interactive games &#8211; also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keeps<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> students more engaged.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Beyond academic excellence<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, high-tech integration into the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">college<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> curriculum also prepares students for the job market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most technologically advanced colleges<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are creating a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-centered approach to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that allows for self-pacing, creativity, and problem-solving skills that aid in employment opportunities. Makerspaces, for example, provide a leg up for students. These labs allow students to create prototypes of their ideas leveraging 3D printing, laser cutters, milling devices and more. The entire process facilitates mentoring, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">innovation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and collaboration that are essential skills into the digital workplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Benefits of a Technology-Advanced College<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools that implement an advanced digital infrastructure allow <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learners<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to more effectively engage with their coursework, professors, and peers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artificial intelligence<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, virtual reality, blockchain networks, and even IBM\u2019s Watson are being deployed across <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">computer science<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">engineering<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> classrooms to enrich the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, for instance, has created a revolutionary and immersive way to teach Mandarin. Students learn this Chinese dialect within a virtual computer-generated street scene and by conversing with avatars. As one successful <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explains: \u201cI thought it would be cheesy. It\u2019s definitely more engaging because you\u2019re actively involved with what\u2019s going on\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re not the only ones making such <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">technological advances<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Southern New Hampshire <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is teaching architecture through the lens of a 3D holographic model. And MIT has created a multi-million-dollar fund to pay <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">faculty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to experiment with teaching innovations!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Campus Hub\u2122: Technology Meets Function<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This post-pandemic world has demonstrated that students are willing to embrace <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">technology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to safely remain on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">campus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 including smart parcel lockers for campus deliveries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whereas most smart lockers on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">campus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were originally installed to assist in secure package delivery and retrieval, today they\u2019re being deployed in ways beyond the mail. Smart lockers now act as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">central distribution system called the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hub for the transfer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of documents, keys, laptops, books, move-in materials and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bookstore Merchandise: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clothing, books, electronics, gifts and more can be retrieved with zero face-to-face interaction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Electronics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> laptops, tablets, and other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">school<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-owned devices can be disseminated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Class Equipment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Classrooms can distribute equipment for course work and projects and students can easily and safely return the items.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>On-<\/b><b>Campus<\/b><b> Dining: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can simply place an order for a meal online via the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">college<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">university<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s dining software and then pick-up their food and beverage items safely without coming in contact with anyone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Student<\/b><b> Mail: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Packages and regular USPS mail.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Move-in\/Move-out Materials<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Items such as keys, ID cards, welcome packets and other important <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">school<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> materials can be shared with students via smart lockers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Event Tickets: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tickets for sporting events and other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> activities can be distributed via smart lockers to minimize lines and contact with ticket agents.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most importantly, Campus Hub allows a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">college student<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">faculty member<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or staff member to retrieve packages contact-free at their convenience. With virtually no one ever leaving their mobile phone far behind, users can quickly, easily, and safely open a smart locker simply by scanning their unique barcode on their phone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These benefits have led savvy administrators at Rollins <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Mount San Jacinto <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Scripps <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Colorado Springs, and Indian River State <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to embrace the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hub model \u2013 successfully merging <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">technology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with functionality. Here are a few examples of higher education institutions who were able to improve their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experience with <\/span><a href=\"\/en-us\/blog\/university-smart-lockers-colleges-reaping-rewards-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">university smart lockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>University of Florida: Boosting the Student Experience<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Florida Housing Department had a parcel problem that was disrupting the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experience.
