This year that\u2019s unlikely to be the case yet, despite this,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quadient.com\/en-GB\/news\/Brits-more-likely-to-shop-online-than-in-store-for-Black-Friday-and-Christmas-2021\">a recent Quadient survey<\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>has found that only just over a fifth (21 per cent) of UK shoppers expect to mostly shop in-store for Black Friday and Christmas. With\u00a0<a><strong>half surveyed shoppers saying they will do most of their shopping online for delivery or click and collect in store<\/strong>, retailers will be aiming to provide\u00a0<\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parcelpending.com\/en-gb\/markets\/retail-parcel-lockers\/\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">convenient order collection<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Bagging a bargain<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Shoppers are choosing online for a number of reasons.\u00a0<strong>Convenience is the most cited<\/strong>, with better prices\/deals second and\u00a0<strong>to save time\/avoid long queues<\/strong>\u00a0third. Last year, not surprisingly, Covid-19 restrictions were mentioned by 48 per cent of respondents but this year this dropped significantly to only 22 per cent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Brits are\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/shopping\/esbest\/black-friday\/black-friday-2021-deals-date-sales-b954690.html\">expected to spend \u00a34.8bn<\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0over Black Friday weekend and so the shopping spree that kick-starts the Christmas splurge is a significant date in retailers\u2019 calendars. With online taking such a large chunk of the predicted spend, a number of big brands have\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/extras\/indybest\/black-friday\/black-friday-2021-uk-when-deals-b1928345.html\">already launched their promotions<\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">. However, according to our survey,\u00a0<strong>online doesn\u2019t guarantee a hassle-free experience<\/strong>. Over a third (34 per cent) of respondents expect to miss a delivery to home or work that will require re-delivery attempts or a depot collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Click and collect grows in popularity<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">It is no surprise then, that\u00a0<strong>over two thirds (67 per cent) of our survey\u2019s online shoppers use click and collect services<\/strong>, up from 60 per cent last year, with almost a third (32 per cent) saying they do so once a month or more. Gen Z and millennials use click and collect services around once a week, while GenX uses it once every two weeks, highlighting the opportunity to retailers,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>particularly those targeting younger shoppers,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>to\u00a0<strong>provide efficient and attractive pick-up options at store<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Click and collect services overcome the problem of the \u2018last mile\u2019, when deliveries can fail to reach their destination because people are out when the courier calls. On average, our surveyed shoppers shop online once a week and that can equate to\u00a0<strong>a lot of potential failed delivery attempts<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">At best, that means shoppers suffer the\u00a0<strong>inconvenience of rearranging a delivery<\/strong>\u00a0and waiting longer for it, or going to a depot to collect.\u00a0<strong>At worst, those missed deliveries result in lost or stolen parcels<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 something a quarter of our respondents have experienced in the last 12 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">All of which makes for a negative shopping experience that reflects on retailers. What\u2019s more,\u00a0<strong>delivering to individual addresses adds up to a whole lot of<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>cost.\u00a0<\/strong>Meanwhile,<strong>\u00a0multiple delivery attempts generate more traffic<\/strong>\u00a0and that does little for retailers\u2019 green credentials.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Improving the click and collect experience<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Tackled in the right way,\u00a0<strong>click and collect provides a simple, convenient, cost-effective way<\/strong>\u00a0for shoppers to take delivery of their goods. Customers wanting to avoid the inconvenience and potential security issue of missing a delivery to home may choose to instead collect their order at the store. However, if they have to queue for a long time there, it defeats one of the reasons why they shopped online in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Holding items in store certainly delivers a secure experience<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0but juggling collections and in-store shopper service is less than ideal for all customers and staff too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Instead,\u00a0intelligent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parcelpending.com\/en-gb\/locker-solutions\/locker-lite\/\"><strong>click &#038; collect lockers<\/strong><\/a><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0can streamline the collection process and reduce pressure<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0on staff. When a customer\u2019s order is ready, they are automatically notified by email, or other electronic means, and receive a unique PIN and barcode. They pop along to parcel lockers at the store and put in the code or scan the barcode to open the single locker assigned to their delivery. It\u2019s a secure way for them to take delivery of their items and\u00a0<strong>face-to-face contact is reduced<\/strong>\u00a0as collecting customers don\u2019t need to be served by staff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Little wonder then that\u00a0<strong>the most popular reason for using lockers, cited by respondents who use parcel lockers in our survey, was convenience<\/strong>\u00a0(28 per cent). A fifth mentioned that lockers can be available 24\/7, while not being at home was mentioned by 19 per cent and security, 18 per cent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">For the retailer,\u00a0<strong>parcel locker pick-ups reduce costly individual home deliveries<\/strong>\u00a0that generate traffic and ease the burden of\u00a0<strong>multiple delivery attempts that negatively impact the environment<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">As Black Friday and holiday season shopping gets underway, retailers will compete to meet customers\u2019 expectations. How they\u00a0<strong>ensure customers take safe delivery of their purchases<\/strong>\u00a0is an important final stage in delivering\u00a0<strong>a hassle-free online shopping experience<\/strong>.
