Although\u00a0sustainable materials\u00a0may increase\u00a0building\u00a0costs, they often have a positive ROI.\u00a0According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globest.com\/2020\/02\/11\/here-are-the-sustainable-features-young-renters-want-to-see-in-their-next-apartment\/\">a report by RENTCafe<\/a>, 69% of respondents were interested in living in an\u00a0energy-efficient or\u00a0green building\u00a0and were willing to pay more to do so.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Green Building Materials<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Transforming into a\u00a0green\u00a0builder requires switching to using sustainable\/renewable building materials and resources during\u00a0construction. Topping the list are bamboo, recycled plastic, wood, hempcrete, and grass concrete.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Net-Zero\u00a0Green\u00a0Buildings<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Net-Zero buildings are simply those designed whereby\u00a0energy consumption\u00a0is equal to their output. Whether on-site or off, the goal is to generate\u00a0renewable energy\u00a0via\u00a0solar panels, wind turbines, and geothermal plants.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>The Link Between Lockers and Emissions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although it takes a little work to understand, there is a clear link between installing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.parcelpending.com\/en-gb\/markets\/residential-parcel-lockers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smart lockers<\/a>\u00a0and reducing carbon emissions. To test the theory that lockers boost efficiencies and decrease van congestion and pollution,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/sctlctr\/research-project-highlights\/urban-goods-delivery-0\">Parcel Pending by Quadient entered into a pilot project<\/a>\u00a0with the University of Washington and its Urban Freight Lab.<\/p>\n<p>The project required the participation of two carriers (UPS and USPS), property managers at the Seattle Municipal Tower (CBRE), the Seattle Department of Transportation, and\u00a0building\u00a0tenants. The goal was to tackle how to handle not just the \u201clast mile\u201d of package delivery, but what is termed the \u201cFinal 50 Feet\u201d- getting the parcel to the tenant\u2019s door. The results were astounding!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Total delivery time plummeted 78% as compared to floor-to-floor and door-to-door delivery.<\/li>\n<li>There were\u00a0<em>zero<\/em>\u00a0failed deliveries to the lockers as compared to seven in the traditional delivery model.<\/li>\n<li>A significant reduction in dwell time (the time a van is parked in a loading zone) reducing traffic and carbon emissions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The study report concluded, \u201cIn short, we\u2019ve proven that lockers are a good solution for some of our urban freight challenges and should be part of our solutions toolkit.\u201d The project was led by Dr. Anne Goodchild, Founding Director, Supply Chain Transportation &amp; Logistics Centre, and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Washington.<\/p>\n<p>This study was so insightful that Parcel Pending by Quadient has partnered again with the Urban Freight Lab in a new research project to determine if the results are repeatable.
