There is no denying that the past year has been extremely turbulent, so it is essential\u00a0for\u00a0employees\u00a0to\u00a0feel as safe and secure as possible on their return to the office environment. To ensure they are fully\u00a0supported\u00a0throughout yet another huge\u00a0transition, there are\u00a0a few\u00a0key considerations for businesses to consider, to safeguard\u00a0employee\u2019s physical and mental health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Is now the right time?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year has seen many people stepping out of their comfort zone by adopting\u00a0<strong>remote working<\/strong>. Although there\u00a0have been\u00a0mixed feelings towards this, one thing for certain is that it has\u00a0completely\u00a0changed<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>expectations around work.\u00a0At the beginning, nobody could have predicted how this would pan out, yet\u00a0many companies have\u00a0actually reported\u00a0that\u00a0<strong>productivity\u00a0<\/strong>has remained stable during the pandemic, and it has even increased in\u00a0some organisations.\u00a0In fact, according to research conducted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/d1c25a6gwz7q5e.cloudfront.net\/reports\/2020-11-09-workplace-whitepaper-FINAL.pdf\">Wharton<\/a>, 83% of employees were either more\u00a0<strong>productive<\/strong>\u00a0or equally as productive when\u00a0<strong>working from home<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Many businesses are now\u00a0rethinking\u00a0their business model\u00a0by\u00a0harnessing\u00a0more agile and\u00a0<strong>flexible working\u00a0<\/strong>practices to meet\u00a0their employees\u00a0changing expectations.\u00a0A survey conducted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessleader.co.uk\/65-of-the-uk-want-to-return-to-the-office-in-june\/114461\/\">MEAVO<\/a>\u00a0discovered that\u00a0the majority of employees want the traditional 9 to 5 day in the office to be replaced by\u00a0<strong>flexible<\/strong>\u00a0working hours and the option to work from home, while research from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icaew.com\/insights\/viewpoints-on-the-news\/2021\/mar-2021\/uk-employees-most-reluctant-to-return-to-the-office\">Personio<\/a>\u00a0found that\u00a0one in four UK employees said they would resign if they were\u00a0forced to return to their place of work.\u00a0With a return to the office\u00a0now\u00a0very much\u00a0in sight,\u00a0it\u00a0is time for\u00a0employers\u00a0to\u00a0check in with individuals and work with them to offer whichever option they feel\u00a0most comfortable\u00a0and safe with.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Implementing safety measures<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For those\u00a0opting for a\u00a0return to the office, it is\u00a0crucial\u00a0for businesses to have\u00a0the correct health and\u00a0<strong>safety measures<\/strong>\u00a0in place. Before arranging the logistics of the return,\u00a0employers\u00a0should liaise with those responsible for implementing\u00a0these\u00a0<strong>safety measures<\/strong>, ensuring all requirements have been met. They also need\u00a0to ensure that they\u00a0regularly\u00a0<strong>communicate<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0staff\u00a0about the\u00a0<strong>safety\u00a0measures<\/strong>\u00a0which have been put in place, as this will\u00a0likely reassure\u00a0the workforce\u00a0that their\u00a0<strong>health\u00a0and\u00a0wellbeing<\/strong>\u00a0is a\u00a0priority.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the measure\u2019s organisations may consider implementing include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sanitising stations\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Providing items such as anti-bacterial gel, wipes, disposable masks and cleaning products positioned at entrances and at intervals around the office to enable regular sanitisation of hands and equipment. Additionally, investing in anti-microbial treatments for surfaces that are likely to be used often such as doors can help to protect employees.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Contact-free handover of items<\/strong>With many individuals now so used to\u00a0<strong>working from home<\/strong>, there may be some concern around physical interactions that occur during the routine handover of items in the workplace, such as paperwork, equipment, and mail.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Hybrid working<\/strong>\u00a0also means the number of people in the office will vary from day to day and schedules may rarely cross over for some people. As such, distributing items can be difficult, especially if they are\u00a0<strong>valuable<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; like laptops, or personal deliveries. As we ease back into the office, in order to reduce contact between people and cross-contamination of equipment many organisations will instead opt for dedicated workstations and additional measures such as plastic screens.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fresh air supply\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Workplaces should maximise ventilation, whether this be natural via open windows, or mechanical via a fresh air conditioning or purifying system.\u00a0 A fresh air supply within the office can help to boost focus and energy levels of employees, as well as reducing the risk of viral transmission. Employees should also be encouraged to take breaks outside of the office, and organisations can help to facilitate this by providing sheltered seating areas, or green open spaces. Additionally, having indoor plants around the office space not only looks appealing, but can improve health, wellbeing and productivity. In fact, a green-certified office could contribute\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/adigaskell\/2017\/02\/15\/a-green-office-equals-a-productive-office\/?sh=7ffd8bcd7ca5\">to 26% boost in cognition and 30% fewer sickness related absences<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Right to disconnect\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quadient.com\/en-GB\/blog\/stress-a-modern-epidemic\">Stress is a modern epidemic<\/a>. According to a study conducted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.perkbox.com\/uk\/resources\/library\/2020-workplace-stress-survey\">Perkbox<\/a>\u00a0in 2020, 79 per cent of working British adults commonly experience\u00a0<strong>work-related stress<\/strong>, with just one per cent saying that they never do. According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.uk\/a-to-z\/w\/work-life-balance\">Mental Health Foundation<\/a>, the pressure of an increasingly demanding work culture in the UK is perhaps the biggest and most pressing challenge to the mental health of the general population. In fact,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/stress\/\">over 11 million days<\/a>\u00a0are lost at work a year because of stress at work. To support the health and wellbeing of employees, organisations should promote a culture of \u2018work smart, not long\u2019. In Ireland there has been a new approach to enable all employees to strike a better work-life balance. In April 2021 the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) published a code of practice on employees \u2018right to disconnect\u2019.
