Younger residents are more likely than other generations to request recycling services. However, they must be easy to access and convenient for residents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Electric Car Charging Stations \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Think beyond Tesla when considering charging stations. As Matthew Davies, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">founder of Harmony Communities<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> states<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRunning a typical 1,500-watt space heater costs $108 per month, but with a heating system that\u2019s running properly, [residents] can cut that bill in half\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Smart Thermostats \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart thermostats can be considered <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if they reduce <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">energy consumption<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. 82% of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> builders installed these devices in their properties, according to the Fall 2020 report by the National Association of Home Builders.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Best Green Building Practices<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent survey of over 2,000 international contractors, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">builders and developers, almost half said they expect to construct more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/articles\/world-green-building-trends-2018-green-keeps-growing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% of their projects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green building<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s by 2021 by using these best practices<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>LEED Certification<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 LEED is the \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green building standard<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d by which all other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sustainability<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> claims are measured. With a stringent rating system, it signifies whether a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">building<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is constructed with minimized resources and\/or using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">renewable energy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> resources versus merely \u201cgreenwashing\u201d the issue. Although <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sustainable materials<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may increase <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">building<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> costs, they often have a positive ROI. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a report by RENTCafe, 69% of respondents were interested in living in an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">energy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-efficient or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green building<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and were willing to pay more to do so<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Green Building Materials<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Transforming into a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> builder requires switching to using sustainable\/renewable building materials and resources during <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">construction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Topping the list are bamboo, recycled plastic, wood, hempcrete, and grass concrete.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Net-Zero <\/b><b>Green<\/b><b> Buildings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Net-Zero buildings are simply those designed whereby <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">energy consumption<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is equal to their output. Whether on-site or off, the goal is to generate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">renewable energy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> via <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">solar panels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, wind turbines, and geothermal plants.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>The Link Between Lockers and Emissions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it takes a little work to understand, there is a clear link between installing <\/span><a href=\"\/en-ca\/blog\/what-are-smart-lockers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smart lockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and reducing carbon emissions. To test the theory that lockers boost efficiencies and decrease truck congestion and pollution, Parcel Pending by Quadient entered into a pilot project with the University of Washington and its Urban Freight Lab<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project required the participation of two carriers (UPS and USPS), property managers at the Seattle Municipal Tower (CBRE), the Seattle Department of Transportation, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">building<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tenants. The goal was to tackle how to handle not just the \u201clast mile\u201d of package delivery, but what is termed the \u201cFinal 50 Feet\u201d- getting the parcel to the tenant\u2019s door. The results were astounding!<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Total delivery time plummeted 78% as compared to floor-to-floor and door-to-door delivery.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zero<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> failed deliveries to the lockers as compared to seven in the traditional delivery model.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A significant reduction in dwell time (the time a truck is parked in a loading zone) reducing traffic and carbon emissions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study report concluded, \u201cIn short, we\u2019ve proven that lockers are a good solution for some of our urban freight challenges and should be part of our solutions toolkit.\u201d The project was led by Dr. Anne Goodchild, Founding Director, Supply Chain Transportation &amp; Logistics Center, and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Washington.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This study was so insightful that Parcel Pending has partnered again with the Urban Freight Lab in a new research project to determine if the results are repeatable. Specific goals are to reduce parking-seeking behavior by 20%, reduce truck dwell time by 30%, and improve commercial efficiency by increasing curb and alley space occupancy rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belltownlockers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">locker system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is currently installed in the Belltown neighborhood of Seattle and offers free, contactless, and 24\/7 <\/span><a href=\"\/en-ca\/blog\/what-is-a-retail-locker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parcel pickup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> access.
