Now \u2013 with universities preparing to welcome back students this fall \u2013 is a perfect time to examine how to create the best university <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for incoming students when they <a href=\"\/en-ca\/blog\/preparing-for-the-return-to-campus-university-reopening\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">return to campus<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pausing Online and Hybrid <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at MBA Schools<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Top-notch MBA programs at Columbia <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Boston <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Stanford <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, New York <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of California, Berkeley have all cancelled their virtual <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> programs. Why? Because both <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">faculty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and students have faced the reality that these expensive degrees aren\u2019t worth the cost without the networking, socializing, and experiences of full in-person <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As J.P. Eggers, vice dean of M.B.A. and graduate programs at New York <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s Stern School of Business explains why the school eliminated hybrid <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cBlended <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with some online and some in person, is the worst of both worlds\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create Flexible Programs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a surging interest in shorter, flexible, and more career-focused <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Claremont Lincoln <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for instance, allows students to take one or two classes at a time and pause as needed. Worcester Polytechnic Institute created a Center for Project-Based <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with astounding results<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90% reported positive impact in solving problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">92% reported stronger character development<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">85% reported enriched life in non-academic ways<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">89% reported positive impact in functioning on a team<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embracing the Power of Technology Beyond Zoom<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the reasons that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online learning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> didn\u2019t meet expectations was because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">faculty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> merely moved teaching their classes to Zoom with disappointing results. 52%<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of students stated that they learned less in the 2020-2021 academic year than they did in the pre-COVID years<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very few <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher education<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> institutions embraced new technologies to boost the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student experience<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In fact, less than 5% of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">university<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> budgets<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are devoted to IT<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Georgia Tech, on the other hand, invested in AI, machine <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and SMS messaging to launch its pioneering online master\u2019s degree in computer science for just $7,000. A whopping 10,000 students are enrolled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher education institutions may also want to consider leveraging technology to improve communication and provide easy access to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">faculty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">staff<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For instance, you can use software to schedule office hours, one-on-one sessions, or guidance meetings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Craft Collaborative Opportunities<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital communication and technology play important roles in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student experience<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One of the high-priority <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> goals of a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">university<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">education<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opportunity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to collaborate with others. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I expect we will see a rise in how chat and other collaboration tools will support both formal and informal communication,&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> predicts <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wendy Colby, CEO of AccelerEd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Also of note is that over 30% <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of respondents to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Voice survey found chat boards, reminders\/nudges, and online discussions are valuable contributors to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> engagement and satisfaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remain Responsive to Mental Health Challenges<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unplanned isolation of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">university<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> students led to depression and frustration during last year\u2019s pandemic protocols. In fact, 65%<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of students report having fair or poor mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offering easy-to-schedule mental health services, private sessions, and responsive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">staff<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> work well. Yale <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a unique response with its Science of Well-Being free class from Coursera. Here, students learn how to boost their own happiness and build new habits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create One-Stop Transactional Offices<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tom Ellett<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> holds a rare job in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher education<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Chief <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experience<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Officer at Quinnipiac <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One of his key learnings this past year from students was the frustration in dealing with different offices for administrative issues such paying their bills, receiving <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">financial aid<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, changing meal plans, and registering for classes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Rand Corporation <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of four <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">community<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">college<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> systems found a 3% average increase in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> retention by moving to an integrated model, with better outcomes for adult learners over the age of 25, and students of color<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting this month, all of these services are under one roof at Quinnipiac.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implement a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hub<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to the need for consolidating transactional services, there\u2019s a growing need to create a central exchange point for goods delivery and retrieval. Instead of sending students to the administration building, <a href=\"\/en-ca\/blog\/increasing-the-efficiency-of-your-campus-mailroom-operations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mailroom operations<\/a> center, <a href=\"\/en-ca\/blog\/modernizing-the-college-bookstore-experience\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">campus shop<\/a>, and admissions office, for example, savvy <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leadership<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher education<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> institutions are leveraging smart lockers to fulfill all types of campus deliveries \u2013 not just packages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart lockers, originally invented to manage <a href=\"\/en-ca\/blog\/what-is-a-retail-locker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parcel pick up<\/a> and delivery, are now transformed into a central distribution system that comes complete with built-in asset tracking software. Institutions can also leverage their own existing tracking software, ensuring minimal disruption to existing customer-facing communication processes to fellow students, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">staff<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">faculty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A self-service option, Campus Hub works to significantly lower labor costs while increasing the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student experience at university<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: universities can do more with fewer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">staff<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while also allowing students to securely retrieve goods and documents on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> schedule.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another beneficial feature offered by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hub is the return process. Whether it\u2019s returning a library book, classroom material, or purchased goods, the barcode or PIN-driven system allows for an easy and safe way to remit goods to various departments and services on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">campus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pandemic permanently changed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher education<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, universities will need to continue to be flexible in offering new programs, consolidating transactions, emphasizing the in-person <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and fostering a sense of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">community<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and well-being.
