Gen Z<\/span> \u2013 the <\/span>younger generation<\/span> with priorities so significantly different than any other generation that they are changing the <\/span>college<\/span> and university landscape. Now is the time to restructure your<\/span> campus experience and provide the best college<\/span> amenities to recruit, retain, and engage with this new generation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting to Know Generation Z<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Welcome to the age of <\/span>Gen Z<\/span>, also known as \u201cZoomers\u201d, who grew up engaging with <\/span>social media<\/span> platforms such as Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Officially <\/span>defined as those born between 1995 and 2012, this new, <\/span>younger generation<\/span> includes approximately 73.6 million people. Now comprising the majority of today\u2019s <\/span>prospective students<\/span>, <\/span>Gen Z<\/span> have witnessed a recession, a pandemic, social unrest, and other significant tragedies. As a result, they tend to view the world and <\/span>college<\/span> radically differently than other generations.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Generation of Diversity and Inclusion<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Gen Z<\/span> is the most diverse generation yet; 52% are non-Hispanic white<\/span>, 14% are black, 6% are Asian and 5% are a different race or two or more races<\/span>1<\/sup><\/span>. <\/span>This generation demands diversity and inclusion when it comes to race, gender, ethnicity, and sexual identity. They vote with their feet (social marches), their thumbs (taking to <\/span>social media<\/span> and other digital mediums), and with their wallets (boycotting brands).<\/span><\/p>\n

Feelings of Financial Insecurity<\/strong><\/h3>\n

According to an eye-opening report from the Chronicle of <\/span>Higher Education<\/span>, feelings of financial insecurity overwhelm <\/span>Gen Z<\/span>\u2019ers<\/span>2<\/sup><\/span>. One in four students reported feeling \u201calways stressed\u201d about money with concern about how to pay for <\/span>college<\/span> adding to their woes.<\/span><\/p>\n

The implications for universities are clear: demonstrate the positive return on investment from a <\/span>college degree<\/span>. Cite specific graduate outcome data so that <\/span>prospective students<\/span> have realistic expectations about the typical <\/span>hiring process<\/span> for recent graduates and what their <\/span>career growth<\/span> trajectory might look like. Be sure to showcase unique degrees and experiences on <\/span>campus<\/span> exclusively available to students. And don\u2019t be afraid to embrace new pricing models that include different tuition for hybrid classes. It\u2019s also important to include price transparency letting students see the true price of their education including books, supplies, and housing.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Pivot in Priorities for Services as Community Amenities<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Climbing walls and high-tech <\/span>fitness centers<\/span> on <\/span>campus<\/span> that worked to recruit <\/span>Millennial<\/span> students are a non-starter for <\/span>Gen Z<\/span>. Instead, <\/span>a typical Gen-Z college student<\/span> is looking for<\/span> a campus facility with<\/span> services that meet their different demands. <\/span>Trends in college student housing have revealed that f<\/span>lexibility and collaboration<\/span> in common areas<\/span> are key. <\/span>Gen Z<\/span> students are <\/span>also looking for <\/span>dorm<\/span> resident <\/span>lounges, flexible learning spaces, and even outdoor <\/span>study <\/span>spaces<\/span> that are both safer and more conducive to creating a stronger connection with nature.<\/span><\/p>\n

A stellar example of this new thinking is highlighted by the North Carolina School of Math. No longer is there an academic lecture space and then a laboratory space. Instead, its Academic Commons <\/span>is a student village that <\/span>weaves together study halls, science and digital labs, virtual learning areas, and a makerspace.<\/span><\/p>\n

And over at <\/span>Lehigh University<\/span><\/a>, newly finished <\/span>student<\/span> housing boasts <\/span>dorm<\/span> resident <\/span>lounges and a coffee bar. Plus, as an added convenience for students, the school recently implemented smart parcel lockers<\/span> for its college apartments<\/span> to provide safe and secure deliveries for students. \u201cCreating a safe environment for students \u2013 especially in light of COVID-19 \u2013 and providing overall exceptional customer service is our priority, and we\u2019re always seeking new innovations to enhance the student experience,\u201d says Mark Ironside, Assistant Vice President of Business Services at Lehigh University of the decision to invest.<\/span><\/p>\n

Integrating Technology with Academics<\/strong><\/h2>\n

At the start of COVID, almost 50% of colleges had no online programs at all<\/span>3<\/sup><\/span>! Today, it\u2019s a vastly different story, with<\/span> a<\/span> virtual learning <\/span>community <\/span>emerging on almost every <\/span>college<\/span> campus<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gen Z<\/span> are <\/span>prospective students<\/span> that grew up with a smart phone almost surgically attached to their hands; they have never known a world where you can\u2019t simply \u201cGoogle it!\u201d As a result, Zoomers tend to view technology differently than other generations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since they\u2019re constantly in search of innovation, these <\/span>college<\/span> students applaud new ways of integrating technology with learning. <\/span>Southern New Hampshire University, for instance, earns high marks for teaching architecture through the lens of a 3D holographic model. And Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has created a revolutionary and immersive way to teach Mandarin. Students can learn this Chinese dialect within a virtual computer-generated street scene and by conversing with avatars. As one successful <\/span>student<\/span> explains: \u201cI thought it would be cheesy. It\u2019s definitely more engaging because you\u2019re actively involved with what\u2019s going on\u201d<\/span>4<\/sup><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most importantly, <\/span>Gen Z<\/span> values practical application of their learning. Given their need for a positive return on investment on their education, they are looking for colleges that arm them with practical skills for life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mental Health & Wellness Are a Priority<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The unplanned<\/span> dorm room<\/span> isolation of university students led to depression and frustration during last year\u2019s pandemic protocols. <\/span>In fact, 65%<\/span> of students report having fair or poor mental health<\/span>5<\/sup><\/span>. <\/span>Offering easy-to-schedule mental health services, private sessions, and responsive staff work well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yale University, for instance, has a unique response with its Science of Well-Being free class from Coursera. Here, students learn how to boost their own happiness and build new habits.<\/span><\/p>\n

Spaces4Learning also recently highlighted efforts by Duke University and the University of Virginia to craft innovative, light-filled spaces that foster wellness<\/span>6<\/sup><\/span>. Both of these universities focus on <\/span>social, physical, psychological, personal, and environmental wellness.<\/span> The Wahoos (affectionately known as \u201cthe Hoos\u201d by University of Virginia alum) even provide a kitchen for cooking up healthy meals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elevate the Student Experience<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Tom Ellett<\/span> holds a rare job in <\/span>higher education<\/span>: Chief Experience Officer at Quinnipiac University<\/span>7<\/sup><\/span>. One of his key learnings<\/span> about college life<\/span> this past year from students was the frustration in dealing with different offices for administrative issues such paying their bills, receiving <\/span>financial aid<\/span>, changing meal plans, and registering for classes. <\/span>A Rand Corporation study of four community <\/span>college<\/span> systems found a 3% average increase in <\/span>student<\/span> retention by moving to an integrated model, with better outcomes for adult learners over the age of 25, and students of color<\/span>8<\/sup><\/span>. <\/span>As of early 2021, these services are under one roof at Quinnipiac.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a new world on <\/span>college<\/span> campuses with <\/span>Generation Z students<\/span>. Administrators must understand the top priorities of this generation and tweak their <\/span>campus <\/span>amenities to serve them.<\/span> Finding ideas to make college campuses better is crucial now more than ever.<\/span> Mental wellness, flexible options, exceptional technology, practical education, and better experiences must all come together to entice tomorrow\u2019s <\/span>college <\/span>student<\/span> body<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
